Sign-ups set for youths to play baseball, softball

We may not be able to see the Orioles play this season, but we can watch the exciting local action on the 10th Avenue ball fields.

The Brooklyn Park Youth Athletic Association is accepting registration for the 1995 softball, baseball and T-ball seasons. All boys and girls between 5 and 16 are invited to play (ages are based on July 31).

Registration will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays this month and 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sundays at Brooklyn Park Elementary School, 200 14th Ave.

The fee is $30 for one child and $50 for two or more children. Money is due at registration. Space is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Brooklyn Park Branch Library will mark Valentine's Day with a free program for children Wednesday.

A "Funny Valentine's Event," with stories, poems and activities, will take place at 10 a.m. for youngsters ages 2 through 6.

Registration is not required, but donations of nonperishable food for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank are welcome.

The library is at 1 East 11th Ave.

The Pascal Senior Center is offering free income-tax preparation to senior citizens.

Volunteers also will assist in the preparation of applications for homeowners' and renters' tax credits.

Even if you do not have to file a tax return, you could be eligible for these credits.

The Arundel Improvement Association will meet at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the association's hall, 705 Cross St.

A county police officer will discuss neighborhood crime prevention.

It's Burger King Night Thursday to benefit Brooklyn Park Elementary School.

Visit the Nursery Road restaurant from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and help the school raise money for projects and activities.

* The art department would like to thank those who donated tubes and leather. It now is seeking aluminum pie plates, large meat trays (family pack), old shirts for smocks and perm squeeze bottles.

North County High School cheerleaders will sponsor a Valentine's Dance from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday in the cafeteria. Tickets are $5 per person and will be sold in advance.

The Brooklyn Health Association will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Brooklyn Park Health Center on Hammonds Lane. Dues of $2 are now payable for the 1995 season.

Harbor Hospital Center news: To build awareness of living "heart healthy," the hospital will sponsor its third annual "Heartwise" program from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Glen Burnie Mall.

Participants will receive a free health profile with blood pressure and cholesterol screenings.

A fitness demonstration designed for people 55 and older will include stretching and cardiovascular exercises.

New Heartwise recipes and ingredient substitutions will teach participants how to improve their heart through changes in cooking and eating habits. For more information, or to receive the free Heartwise recipes and materials, call 347-2563.

* Two new women's health booklets are available at the hospital.

"Menopause: A New Stage of Life" describes the natural transition in a woman's life and discusses hormone replacement therapy.

The other booklet, "A Women's Guide to Osteoporosis," helps assess risks of the disease and offers advice on preventing it.

It stresses the importance of calcium and tells how to calculate the amount needed, the significant role that physical activity plays in preventing osteoporosis and what lifestyle changes should be made to decrease chances of getting it.
