LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Marc Lay scored 19 points to lead UMBC to a 62-59 victory over Liberty in a Big South Conference game last night.
With the Retrievers (9-10, 6-3) leading 59-55 with 2:36 remaining in the game, Lay hit two free throws to push the lead to 61-55. Eric Pothoven brought Liberty (8-11, 4-5) to within 61-59 with two baskets, but Lay converted two free throws with six seconds left after being fouled by Jason Dixon.
Eric Hayes added 14 points and six rebounds for the Retrievers, who have won four of their last five games. Tony Thompson added 11 points.
Dixon led all scorers with 20 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds for Liberty, which shot 22-for-62 from the field. Peter Aluma added 15.
