They keep on doing it. One of the latest books to be banned is "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," by Ernest J. Gaines. In Conroe, Texas, the seventh grade class on racial tolerance was reading this fictionalized account of a 110 year old black woman born into slavery. Concerned black parents protested the language, in particular " a six-letter racial epithet," frequently seen in literature of the period. The school took the book out of circulation. " Of all books!" said Gaines. " But nothing surprises me anymore. Books like the Bible and some by Shakespeare and Faulkner have been banned, so I'm in good company." And he said, he has always been proud that " Miss Jane Pittman" is frequently read during Black History Month, which begins this week.
