Bays' 9-game win streak ends, 15-9

The visiting Connecticut Wolves had all the answers last night.

The Baltimore Bays found themselves trailing early, and every time they got close, the Wolves responded.

Connecticut's Leszek Wrona found Elvis Thomas three times in the fourth quarter to lead the Wolves to a 15-9 win at Du Burns Arena.

The loss ended a nine-game winning streak for the Bays (11-3), who remained atop the U.S. Interregional Soccer League's North South Division. The Wolves avenged a 15-6 loss to the Bays earlier in the season.

Thomas finished with five goals and two assists and got plenty of help from Wrona, who had one goal and five assists. Connecticut goalkeeper Sloan Spaeth had 30 saves.

"They killed us with their counterattacks," said Bays coach Kevin Healey. "Elvis is obviously very strong and quick, and we didn't play smart. We didn't recognize when someone was in trouble and didn't slide back to help.

"I thought we kept our composure tonight and after coming back twice on the road in close games, thought we could come back, but their counterattacks didn't allow it."

Trailing 7-4 five minutes into the third quarter, the Bays got goals from Mark Mettrick and Eric Riedlbauer 30 seconds apart to close within 7-6.

Connecticut came back with its second short-handed goal when Thomas found Jimmy Sheridan on a breakaway. When Armindo Gomes scored midway through the quarter, the Wolves again led by three.
