Ruth broke into the big leagues with the Boston Red Sox as a left-handed pitcher, playing on three World Series winner and becoming on of the major leagues' best pitchers before beginning the conversion to the outfield in 1918. After the 1919 season, the Red Sox's cash-starved owner sold Ruth to the New York Yankees for $125,000 plus a #300,000 loan. It was the dawn of the home run era and of the Yankees' dynasty. Ruth topped 50 homers four times in the 1920s, including 60 in 1927. Before Ruth, no one had hit 30 in a season. He led the Yankees to seven American league pennants and four world championships. When his career ended in 1935, his 714 home runs were about twice as many as any other player. No other player before or since stood so far above his contemporaries.
