St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys was Ruth's primary home from age 7 to 19. His main influence was Brother Matthias Boutilier, a physically imposing Xaverian and the school's disciplinarian. Ruth revered Brother Matthias and credited him with honing Ruth's fielding skills. As the school's star athlete, Ruth played his way out of St. Mary's when Jack Dunn signed him to a contract with the International Leaguer's Orioles in 1914.
