Police officials have interviewed a suspect in the wake of three thefts since November from a locker room at Westminster High.
Investigators said Wednesday night that they were going to question a former student in connection with the three incidents, but officials said no charges had been filed as of yesterday afternoon.
The latest incident was Tuesday night, when members of the Frederick High School boys basketball team told state police that valuables were stolen from clothing that was left in the locker room during a game. Officers had not completed their investigation of the theft and were not able to furnish the value of the items stolen.
On Jan. 17, $193 in cash and a gold wristwatch were stolen from members of the South Carroll High boys basketball team in the same locker room during a game.
Members of the South Carroll football team told police that their clothing was searched and valuables stolen from the same locker room while they played at Westminster High last fall. It is unknown what was stolen at that time.
State police said the locker room was unlocked during the games. But Carl Snook, assistant principal at Westminster, said school policy requires the locker rooms to be secured.
"All of the locker rooms are locked," he said. "It's not like the doors are left open."
Peter B. McDowell, director of secondary education, said thefts can happen at any school despite the "cages" provided in locker rooms in which athletes can store valuables.
"Most high schools are like pieces of Swiss cheese," Mr. McDowell said. "You've got kids coming in, kids going out. It's very difficult to secure areas.
"If anybody thinks this is the first time there's been a theft in a locker room, they're wrong," he said.
