The Annapolis Finance Committee gave its vote of confidence to a proposed conference center yesterday by approving $60,000 to study a potential development site at West Street and Taylor Avenue.
The money would be used to review how a conference center would affect economic activity, land use and traffic conditions at the West Street intersection.
The Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau originally had sought $140,000 for the study. Some residents criticized the request. They said using public money to study a proposed conference center amounted to little more than a subsidy for the hospitality industry, which stands to benefit from the development.
The measure comes up for a vote before the City Council Feb. 13.
Money stolen from restaurant
Someone broke into a Wings To Go shop Tuesday morning and stole $528 from an unlocked safe, county police said.
An employee of the restaurant in the 900 block of Bay Ridge Road was in a drive-through line at a McDonald's next door when she saw a man run out of the restaurant's back door shortly before 10 a.m. The woman called police, authorities said.
The restaurant's alarm apparently did not sound. Police do not know how the man got into the store. Officers searched the nearby wooded area but did not find the man, police said.
