County police arrested a Baltimore man Wednesday afternoon on charges of stealing cigarettes worth $28 from a Revco Pharmacy in Linthicum, authorities said.

Northern District Officer Kevin Jackson stopped three men, two of whom were chasing the third down Furnace Branch Road about 4 p.m.

One of the men was Anthony Fridas, the manager of the Revco store in the 7000 block of Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., police said. The second was someone helping in the pursuit.

Mr. Fridas told the officer the store alarm had sounded when the man he was chasing left the store, indicating he was carrying merchandise he had not paid for.

Officer Jackson searched the man and found nine packs of Newport cigarettes that Mr. Fridas identified by their security tags as belonging to Revco. Officer Jackson arrested the man and took him to Northern District station to be booked.

Darrell John Edwards, 35, of the 4000 block of Edgewood Road, was charged with misdemeanor theft.

Robbers leave empty-handed

Two men who forced a Northeast Baltimore man to lie on his stomach at gunpoint Wednesday evening left empty-handed after they searched his pockets and boots and found no money, county police said.

Christopher Coleman, 22, went to the Motel 6 in the 5100 block of Raynor Ave. about 7:30 p.m. to party with friends, police reported. Two men approached him on a motel balcony and asked if he had money. When he told them he didn't, one of them reached into his coat and pulled out a blue steel revolver and forced Mr. Coleman to lie on his stomach, police said.

The men forced Mr. Coleman to remove his boots, threw the boots off the balcony and searched Mr. Coleman's pockets, police said. They ran off when they found no money, police said.
