Offbeat TV for children is coming

THE BALTIMORE SUN

"Five Guys Named Moe," the hit stage musical featuring the songs of Louis Jordan, and the cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" are set to become animated TV shows for children.

The series are part of an ambitious development slate at Nelvana Ltd., the Toronto-based film and TV company, which is one of the largest producers of animated programming for the U.S. networks. Besides producing series such as "Babar," "Rupert" and "The Care Bears," the company also converted the dark comedy "Beetlejuice" into an animated kids' show.

David Ferguson, London-based director of co-productions at Nelvana, said all the sexual aspects will, of course, be dropped from the kid version of "Rocky," and all the characters will be youngsters. "Dr. Frank N. Furter will not be a cross-dresser; he'll just dress like he wants to," Mr. Ferguson said. "Asexually."
