A 54-year-old man, who is alleged to have shot his girlfriend during a domestic dispute, was shot seven times by a police officer Wednesday night after he refused to drop his weapon, police said.
The man, whose name was not released, was being operated on last night at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.
Police said that about 7:30 p.m. as Officer Adam Kirhagis, 22, of the Southeastern District responded to a domestic dispute in the 200 block of N. Spring Court, he saw a 40-year-old woman run from the house, bleeding from a bullet wound to the left arm.
As Officer Kirhagis approached the house, the man, armed with a handgun, came outside, police said. The officer ordered him to drop the weapon but the man did not, police said.
Police said Officer Kirhagis drew his 9mm Glock handgun and fired seven shots, wounding the man five times in the right side, once in the right arm and once in the groin.
Officer Kirhagis was not injured and was place on administrative leave pending an investigation of the incident, police said.
