Basketball
* 7th-8th grade boys -- Behind Kevin Knipel's 15 points and five rebounds, the North Carroll White team breezed past New Windsor I, 49-25, in the Carroll County Area League. Jemel Hogan added 12 points and 13 rebounds.
North Carroll (2-0) came back from a one-point halftime deficit with its pressure defense leading to easy layups. North Carroll outscored New Windsor 31-6 after halftime.
Mark Campbell, Regis D'Angelo and Dominic Teruzzi each made five steals for North Carroll. Campbell also scored 10 points.
New Windsor was led by Jason Bowman (six points) and Eric Grinder (five).
* 4th-6th grade girls -- Becky Wike produced eight points to help league-leading H.E. Ruhlman (2-0) to an 18-11 victory over Domino's Pizza (1-1). Jessica Piper had six points for Domino's.
Lori Lang dropped in nine points to push W&W; Plumbing (1-1) past Manchester Dental Center, 17-13, for its first victory. Manchester (0-2) was led by Nicole Holland's nine points.
* 3rd-4th grade boys -- Jeremy Praynor scored six points to power Dr. Diegert's Drill Team to a 12-1 win over H.E. Ruhlman (1-1). The Drill Team (2-0) remained the only undefeated team in the league.
Steven Sheppard's 18 points led Bob's Variety (1-1) over American Legion Post #200, 26-8. Kyle Reese's six points topped Post #200 (1-1).
* 7th-and-8th-grade boys and girls -- Hughes Trash Removal and J.B.'s Bombers both pulled out of a four-way tie for first to keep a share of the league lead.
Steve Bair scored 28 points as J.B.'s Bombers (2-0) defeated Enterprise Rent-a-Car, 43-35. Justin Raynor had 15 points for Enterprise (1-1).
With 15 points from Steve Walanski, Hughes Trash (2-0) ran past Tom's Triple Play, 43-34. Tom's Triple Play (0-2) was led by Brian Lenz's 12 points.
Wes Harrell led a balanced attack with nine points as Hampstead Sports evened its record at 1-1 by defeating Lippy Brothers, 22-20. Mark Campbell led all scorers with 13 points for Lippy Brothers (1-1).
Mark Winemiller contributed 16 points as White Pine Paving (1-1) cruised past Manchester Pharmacy, 50-22. Kevin Zander added 14 points for Manchester (0-2).
* High-school boys division -- Ben Berchock scored 16 points and Jared Lippy added 13 to lead the Spurs to a 54-45 win over the Lakers in the Sandymount League. Mike Penlon led the Lakers with 10 points.
Jim Stullwith's 22 points moved the Celtics over the Bullets, 63-50. Nick Ingallina had 16 points for the Bullets.
With Matt Mathias' 22 points, the Rockets routed the Bulls, 72-44. Jason Norris added 12 points for the Rockets.
Senior girls division -- Behind a balanced offense, the St. Joseph's Red Devils edged the Westminster Wildcats, 18-17. Kathleen Birck, Chrissy McKeldin and Jen Stansbury each had four points for the Red Devils.
Tara Gebhardt scored seven of her nine points in the second half to lead the Wildcats.
Danielle Gray, Laura Siltman and Amie Rose tossed in eight points apiece as the Tar Heels topped the Chocolates, 40-28.
The Tar Heels opened the game with a 16-3 run. But the Chocolates battled back by outscoring the Tar Heels 12-4 to end the first half to close to within five at halftime.
On the strength of a 10-3 spurt, the Tar Heels broke open the game for good.
Melinda Erbe tallied 13 points to lead St. John over Westminster III, 27-20.
Erbe was selected as the most outstanding offensive player, and Erin Friday and Amanda Goodacre were credited as the outstanding defensive players.
Goodacre also scored five points and Abby Pyzik added four points.
Wrestling
The Warriors swept a tri-meet as well as participated in the Walkersville Tournament and Severna Park novice tournament.
The Warriors defeated McKim, 48-43, with all their wins by pins except for Jason Hamper (130 pounds), who won by forfeit.
The other winners for the Warriors were Kellen Weber (65), Dan Patterson (75), Bryan Hamper (85), Jared Zilmer (107), Zach Cox (115) and Mike Muller (122).
The Warriors then topped Dundalk, 56-33. Winners by pin were Weber, Patterson, Mark Richard (80), Bryan Hamper, Cox, Muller and Jason Hamper.
Neil Boger won by technical fall, Zilmer took a 7-3 decision and Josh Elder (140) won by forfeit. Weber was selected as outstanding wrestler for the tri-meet.
In the Walkersville Tournament, the Warriors placed five in the finals.
Cox, Muller and Jason Hamper won titles at the tournament, which included more than 500 wrestlers. Weber and Bryan Hamper placed second.
Five wrestlers for the B squad of the Warriors won their weight classes at the Severna Park novice tournament. Dan Gilliam, Andrew Winfield, Matt Elder, Kyle Collins and Mike Hollman all placed first.
Matt Fogle, Craig Barkhimer, Jake Collins, Ken Dunsmore, Matt and Sean Daugherty and Brian Merryman were runners-up in the tournament.
Gymnastics
* Level 5 -- Brittany Traeger won the 9-11 age group championship at a recent meet for host Perna Gymnastics. Traeger placed third on the vault (8.60), second on the bars (8.90), third on the beam (8.60) and first on the floor exercise (8.60) for the top all-around score of 34.80.
Runner-up at the meet was Holly Baust, who had an all-around total of 34.75. She finished fourth on the vault (8.75), third on the bars (8.90), first on the beam (9.05) and third on the floor exercise (8.35).
Others placing for Perna in the top 10 were Claire Tull (fourth, 33.35), Katie Mechalske (fifth, 33.20), Lindsay Winter (sixth, 33.15) and Megan Newman (seventh, 32.90). Winter had the division's top score on the bars (9.25).
In the 7-8 age group, Kira Armacost took third all-around with a score of 30.20. She was first on the beam (8.60) and scored 6.70 on the vault, 7.40 on the bars and 7.50 on the floor exercise.
* Level 5C -- Megan Burda of Perna won the 9-11 age group of the home meet
with an all-around score of 31.15. After finishing third on the vault (7.70) and fourth on the bars (7.40), Burda took second on the beam (8.35) and first on the floor exercise (7.70).
Carmen Fajardo followed Burda for second place with an all-around score of 30.10. She was eighth on the vault (7.30), first on the bars (8.15), seventh on the beam (7.30) and second on the floor exercise (7.35).
Andrea Keefer placed sixth all-around (28.20) with the top score on the beam (8.60). Julie Bright was seventh (27.80), placing first on the vault (8.00).
In the 12-14 age division, Lauren Reese took third place with an all-around score of 26.05. She was second on the vault (7.40), third on the bars ( 6.55) and third on the beam (6.55).
* Level 6 -- Lauren Reese and Kelly Shabinaw shared Perna's third title at the home meet, claiming first-place all-around (34.35).
Reese finished second on the vault (8.90), first on the bars (8.85), second on the beam (8.40) and fourth on the floor exercise (8.20). Shabinaw placed first on the beam (8.90) and floor exercise (8.80), third on the vault (8.85) and fifth on the bars (7.80).
Placing fourth all-around (33.60), Courtney Prentice was first on the vault (9.10), third on the bars (8.20), seventh on the beam (7.70) and second on the floor exercise (33.60).
* Class 3 -- At a SABI meet in Virginia, Scott Clingan led Perna by placing first all-around with a score of 41.65. Perna took four of the top five spots, including the first three.
Clingan scored 7.30 on the floor exercise, 7.85 on the vault and 5.00 on the horse, but won the rings (7.80), parallel bars (7.50) and high bar (6.20).
Nick Willet was second all-around (39.95), taking first on the horse (5.80) and the vault (8.25). Along with a first-place finish on the floor exercise (8.00), Chris Forman placed third overall (39.30).
Ed Caldwell rounded out the top five with an all-around total 36.55.
* Class 5 -- Perna placed four gymnasts in the top 10 of this category.
Jon Roscoe led Perna with a third-place finish all-around (31.00). He was third on the floor exercise (5.00), parallel bars (5.90) and horse (6.50), second on the rings (6.00) and high bar (2.80) and first on the vault (6.10).
Others placing in the top 10 were Sean Ruth (fifth, 35.40), John Royer (eighth, 30.80) and Jared Craig (10th, 30.50).
* Class 6 -- Desmond Grady and Adam Tenney both tied for sixth with an all-around score of 29.30.
Grady was third on the floor exercise (5.10), fifth on the rings (5.10) and fourth on the vault (5.10) and the high bar (4.60). Tenney placed third on the rings (5.60), fourth on the parallel bars (5.20) and sixth on the floor exercise (4.80).
