A 34-year-old man was fatally struck by a car Wednesday night as he tried to cross Route 198 at the intersection with Whiskey Bottom Road, county police said.
The name of the victim, J. Concepcion Mendoza, was released by police last night after his family in Mexico was notified. A paving company worker, Mr. Mendoza was living alone in Laurel and helping to support his family, police said.
David Gordon Bomzoff, 24, of the 8000 block of Green Leaf Terrace in Glen Burnie was driving his 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix west on Route 198 about 7:30 p.m. Mr. Mendoza was crossing Route 198 and was about 500 feet from the intersection when Mr. Bomzoff swerved to avoid hitting him, police said.
Mr. Mendoza ran into the path of the car, which hit him, knocked him onto the hood and sent him head first through the passenger-side windshield, police said.
Mr. Mendoza died of head, neck and chest injuries and also had multiple compound fractures of his right arm and left leg, police said.
