Adrian Spears (189 pounds) pinned Aaron Lawson in 3:11 to secure Northeast's 36-34 victory over visiting Broadneck last night.
His fall, coupled with another by Ron Katzenberger (171), gave the No. 4 Eagles (11-0, 8-0) a 36-28 lead, neutralizing a forfeit to Broadneck heavyweight Arto Vartanian (18-1).
"I didn't want this loss to be on my head," said Spears (13-4).
"I just went out there to take care of business and do what I had to do."
Northeast, which plays host to Arundel tomorrow night, trailed, 28-24, after a fall by Andy Chambliss (160). Chambliss' teammate, Rob Peck (152), had previously overcome an 8-2 deficit to pin Chris Morrow (13-4) with eight seconds left.
"We just got stuck too many times and gave up a lot of points," said Northeast coach Al Kohlhafer. "There were some key kids who came through for us, but overall, we were kind of sloppy -- and that's no knock on Broadneck. I just think we could have done a better job."
No. 7 Broadneck (7-2 overall and in the league), went up, 6-0, on a fall by Ben Helbig (103, 14-4). But the Eagles took the next three bouts to lead, 12-6.
Glen Mosco (112) held off Matt Ormsby, 11-5, before the Eagles' defending state champion Kusick twins took the mat. Marty (119, 17-0), ranked No. 1 in the state, scored a 21-6 technical fall, and Mike (125, 16-1) had nine takedowns in a 20-8 decision.
"We kind of felt a lot of pressure down low to win big," said Mosco, who has seen action from 103 to 119. "I felt like I was going to win once I got up on my guy, but I was nervous the whole match."
Broadneck's Lonnie Donner (130, 16-2) then came through with a first-period pin of Glen Lail (15-3). But Northeast's Jay Queer (135, 19-1) matched Donner with a pin of his own, putting his team up, 18-12.
It was 18-16 after the 140-pound bout, featuring Isaac Putnam (14-4) winning, 11-2, over Northeast's T.R. Fleming (11-4) in a bout that was tied at 2 after a period.
Northeast went up, 24-26, after Broadneck's Mike Schardt (145), trailing, 8-4, against Tyrone Eaton (16-4), injured his ankle and had to default.
Eaton scored four takedowns in the match -- the last one turning Schardt's ankle and ending the bout.
South River (2-7), the third team in the tri-meet, was routed, 50-12, by Northeast, and 53-9, by Broadneck. Vartanian capped the Bruins' victory over the Seahawks with a 12-second pin.
South River's county champ Gene Reid (112) won both matches by a combined 24-1 to improve to 15-2.
Travis Murdock (119, 14-3) trailed only 4-3 at one point against Marty Kusick, who usually wrestles at 112. But a third-period escape and takedown secured a 7-3 victory over the taller Murdock.
