Outlook: Penn State won its first Big Ten title in its second season in the league and is the first Big Ten team to enter the Rose Bowl undefeated since Ohio State in 1979. The Nittany Lions will play in the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1923. Penn State coach Joe Paterno can become college football's all-time winningest bowl coach; he and Bear Bryant each have 15 bowl wins. Paterno also can become the first coach to win each of the traditional four major bowl games (Rose, Sugar, Orange and Cotton). Penn State has a 16-game winning streak, the longest in the nation, and led the country in scoring (47.8 ppg). Heisman Trophy runner-up Ki-Jana Carter of Penn State has nine 100-yard rushing games this season and finished with 1,539 yards and an outstanding 7.8 yards per carry. Kerry Collins led the nation in passing efficiency, throwing for 2,679 yards and 21 touchdowns. Bobby Engram caught 52 passes for 1,029 yards and won the Biletnikoff Award as the best wide receiver in the country. Freddie Scott had 47 catches for 973 yards and nine touchdowns. Oregon last played in Pasadena on New Year's Day in 1958 and the Ducks last played in a bowl game in 1992, when they lost to Wake Forest in the Independence Bowl. Oregon closed the season with six straight wins. Danny O'Neill of the Ducks has 20 touchdown passes, including 13 during the winning streak. TB Dino Philyaw has rushed for 702 yards on 177 carries with seven touchdowns. WR Cristin McLemore has 32 catches for 474 yards with eight touchdowns. The Ducks rank 12th nationally in rushing defense (112 yards per game). Safety Jeff Sherman led the Ducks with 107 tackles. The last meeting between the teams was a 22-14 Penn State triumph in 1964.
