Laurel track president Joe De Francis and Buddy Mays, president of Local 27 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, which represents about 750 track employees, said last night they are close to reaching a tentative contract agreement that is expected to be presented to the workers for a vote on Tuesday morning.
"There are still two big economic issues that need to be resolved," Mays said. "But if we can come up with some sort of a compromise by Monday morning, we should be able to print the proposed contract that afternoon and distribute it to the membership. We're close, but we're still talking."
The employees are expected to meet to discuss and vote on the proposed contract at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Pikesville Hilton.
