UMBC coach Kathy Solano recorded her 200th career victory yesterday as UMBC edged Long Island, 66-60, in the consolation game of the Mr. Cookie Face Holiday Classic in Jersey City, N.J.
Eunice French led the Retrievers (3-5) with 16 of her season-high 21 points in the second half. French, a senior center, also had 16 rebounds.
UMBC led by six at halftime and extended the margin to 11 midway through the second half. The Bluebirds (1-7) closed to 52-50 with 3:49 left, but the Retrievers went on a 6-0 run to seal the win.
* Campbell 70, Loyola 59: Center Nicky Coleman scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Campbell (5-2) over Loyola in the Red Flash Classic in Loretto, Pa.
The Greyhounds (7-2) will play Davidson in the consolation game today at 1 p.m.
Heather Abbot scored 16 to lead Loyola.
Campbell, which led by 11 at halftime, scored the first six points of the second half. The Camels then outscored Loyola 21-13 to jump out to a 58-39 lead with 9:22 remaining.
