A Washington man was killed Wednesday afternoon when his car crashed into a utility pole in Beverly Beach, police said.

John Henry Brown, 66, of the 300 block of 53rd St. S.E., was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1 p.m. accident.

Witnesses told police Mr. Brown was speeding and had passed several other vehicles on Beverly Avenue before he came to a curve near Spruce Avenue. At that point, Mr. Brown lost control of his 1987 Chevrolet Cavalier, crossed the center line and hit a tree, police said. The car then rolled over on its passenger side before slamming into a utility pole.

The impact with the pole caused the car's roof to collapse, police said. Mr. Brown was not wearing a seat belt.

Cars set afire at repair shop

Annapolis police say an arsonist started the fire that damaged two cars parked at an Annapolis auto repair shop this week.
