The man county homicide detectives charged with murder Tuesday in the stabbing death of an Annapolis woman escaped in October from the Anne Arundel County Detention Center, where he was serving a six-month sentence for beating the same woman, according to police and court records.
Richard Edward Janey, 30, was charged yesterday in the slaying of Susan McAteer, 32, of the first block of Southgate Ave. in Annapolis. He was ordered held without bail by District Court Judge Essom Ricks.
Court documents, which list Mr. Janey's address as the 100 block of Obery Court in Annapolis, show that he was convicted Sept. 16 of battery for beating Ms. McAteer and sentenced to serve six months on a work-release program.
Police issued a warrant for his arrest on escape charges when he failed to return from his work-release job to the Detention Center Oct. 11.
Documents charging Mr. Janey in the slaying say that he implicated himself by telling police he disposed of Ms. McAteer's body in the woods and destroyed evidence connected with the slaying.
Ms. McAteer's body was found shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday, fully clothed, near woods in the 300 block of Dubois Road.
She had been stabbed to death, police said.
Assistant State's Attorney Daryl Jones told Judge Ricks that Ms. McAteer was stabbed more than 20 times.
"The defendant admitted to being at the scene. This is a violent person who should not be given any type of bond," Mr. Jones argued.
Homicide detectives developed leads that pointed to Mr. Janey and an Annapolis woman.
Officer George Kelley of the Annapolis police learned of Mr. Janey's whereabouts from informants and arrested him at a house in the first block of Clay St. Wednesday morning.
County homicide detectives picked Mr. Janey up from Annapolis Police Department headquarters shortly after 10 a.m. the same day, police said.
Lt. Harry Collier, head of the crimes against persons unit of the county Police Department, said the woman has not been found and that police will not know until they question her whether she will be charged.
Police would not say what the motive for the slaying was.
