UMBC women fall to UTEP, 48-42 STATE WOMEN

Laura Walker hit a three-pointer with 1:13 left to break a 40-40 tie, leading UTEP to a 48-42 victory over UMBC in the first round of the Mr. Cookie Face Classic yesterday in Jersey City, N.J.

UMBC plays in the consolation game today at 6 p.m. against the loser of the St. Peter's vs. Long Island University game.

* Coppin State 59, Cornell 53: Rene Doctor had 13 points and 20 rebounds to move Coppin State over visiting Cornell. The Eagles held the Big Red to 32 percent shooting.

* Murray State 71, Navy 67: Shonta Hunt scored 23 to help Murray State past visiting Navy. Becky Dowling scored 19 for the Midshipmen.

* James Madison 66, Towson State 59: Sarah Schreib and Holly Rilinger both scored 16 to lead James Madison (5-4) over Towson State (1-8) in the St. Joseph Tournament. Trinnette Tucker led the Tigers with 23 points, nine boards.

* Boston University 71, Morgan State 59: Jil Sosnak scored 23 points to lead Boston University (6-2) over Morgan State (0-6) in the consolation game of the La Salle Tournament.

* Frederick CC 102, CC of Rhode Island 41: Freshman Ashanta Sellers (Largo High) scored 22 points as Frederick CC (8-1) defeated visiting Rhode Island in the Frederick CC Holiday Mixer.

* Union CC 70, Essex CC 48: Ragina Johnson scored 20 to lead Union CC (8-3) past Essex CC (1-2).
