People moving out of Maryland outnumbered those moving in during the last three years, and the state's long economic slump is apparently to blame.

Had there not been a fairly healthy rate of natural population increase -- more people being born than people dying -- then Maryland would have lost population, the Census Bureau says. As it is, the state's population passed 5 million in 1994.
