Police search for estranged husband charged in shooting death of wife

A 41-year-old Ellicott City woman found shot in the head at the end of her driveway also may have been run over by her attacker's car, the state medical examiner's office reported yesterday.

Howard County police issued a warrant yesterday charging Daniel Scott Harney, 40, in the slaying of his estranged wife, Shirley Scott Harney, and in the shooting of her 45-year-old male friend.

Investigators continued an interstate search for Mr. Harney and his two sons: Paul, 10, and Ryan, 8. The boys were last seen Monday afternoon when Mr. Harney picked them up from Mrs. Harney's Ellicott City home.

Family members in McLean, Va., said yesterday that they hadn't seen Mr. Harney or heard from him since he disappeared.

They expressed doubt that he could have been involved in the attack at the Brampton Hills house.

"It didn't seem like something he'd do," said one woman who identified herself only as a relative of Mr. Harney.

The woman said that the family was worried about the safety of Paul and Ryan.

"They were perfect," she said.

Police released photos of Mr. Harney yesterday, saying he was the focus of their case.

Sgt. Steve Keller, a police spokesman, refused to comment on the investigation or whether police believe Mr. Harney, a Westinghouse Corp. employee, has left the state.

He said a murder weapon had not been found.

Meanwhile, the Woodlawn man wounded at Mrs. Harney's home was reported in fair condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore yesterday with a gunshot wound to the arm.

Neighbors near the Harney house in the 5000 block of Brampton Parkway said they were keeping an eye on the house, in case the gunman returned.

According to police, about 9:30 p.m. Monday, someone broke a small rear basement window, slipped through the opening and attacked Mrs. Harney and a male guest in a second-floor bedroom. The victims struggled with the attacker before they were shot, police said.

A next-door neighbor said he heard arguing then "two or three big bangs," before a car peeled away from the Harneys' house with its tires screeching.

The male victim, a witness whose name is being withheld by The Sun while the gunman is at large, called 911.

A preliminary autopsy shows Mrs. Harney, a legal secretary in Baltimore, had been shot several times.

The report also showed internal injuries and "blunt trauma" wounds, which police said could have been caused by a car.

Police are still trying to figure out how Mrs. Harney ended up at the end of her driveway.

Skid marks overlap bloodstains in front of Mrs. Harney's home.

"We knew from some of her injuries they did not appear to be strictly gunshots," Sergeant Keller said. "It is possible she was struck with a car."

Neighbors at Mr. Harney's Owings Mills address said yesterday that they had not seen the man recently.

Mr. Harney moved to the apartment on Flint Hill Drive after he and his wife separated several months ago.

Mr. Harney was last seen driving a grayish 1987 Toyota Camry with Maryland tags VEJ 169.

Anyone with information should call Howard County police at 313-2220.
