Site: Tucson, Ariz.

Time: 8 tonight

Outlook: Coach Gary Gibbs resigned under fire last month and will complete his Sooners tenure in the Copper Bowl before giving way to Howard Schnellenberger. Oklahoma -- 44-22-2 in six seasons under Gibbs -- ranks 12th nationally in total defense (295.7 yards a game). Brigham Young is ninth in total offense (457 yards a game). The Sooners held No. 1 Nebraska to its lowest point total of the season in a 13-3 loss in November. Defensive end Cedric Jones set a Sooners record with 14 sacks this season. BYU will make its first trip to the Copper Bowl, failing to represent the Western Athletic Conference in the Holiday Bowl for just the second time in seven years. The Cougars are 0-4-1 in their past five bowl games. BYU junior John Walsh, who could be a top NFL draft pick if he turns pro, has thrown for 3,712 yards and 29 touchdowns. The Cougars' Jamal Willis rushed for 1,042 yards and 12 touchdowns and has back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.
