Stoffey, Loyola turn back Iona, 52-46 STATE WOMEN

Patty Stoffey scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Loyola to a 52-46 women's victory over Iona yesterday in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Greyhounds (7-1) are off to their best start since the 1978-79 season. Iona is 3-6.

Loyola's Lynn Albert tied her career high with 16 points, shooting seven for 10 from the field.

* St. Joseph's 74, Towson State 60: Amy Facer scored 19 and St. Joseph's (5-0) took a 15-point halftime advantage to power past Towson State in the opening round of the St. Joseph's Tournament in Philadelphia.

St. Joseph's advances to the final. Towson State (1-7) will play in the consolation bracket.

Tanya Belair led Towson State with 15.

St. Joseph's took the biggest lead, 50-28, 14:48 into the second half.

* Siena 87, Coppin 59: Tammy Smith scored 23 points to lead Siena (4-2) over visiting Coppin State (2-6). Rene Doctor led the Eagles with 17 points.

* La Salle 84, Morgan State 64: Chrissie Donahue scored 23 points as host La Salle (5-2) defeated Morgan State at the La Salle Tournament in Philadelphia. Karla Warfield scored 13 points to lead the Golden Bears.

* Essex CC 47, North Hampton (Pa.) CC 42: Tina Lotz scored 21 points to lead visiting Essex Community College (1-2) over North Hampton (Pa.) CC (1-7).
