Outlook: The Midshipmen climbed over the .500 mark by beating Florida Atlantic, 83-66, Friday night. Senior F Wes Cooper leads the team in scoring (14.3) and rebounding (9.3). Sophomore G Randy Torgrimson is averaging 11.1 points and sophomore guard Brian Walker is averaging 4.1 assists. The Wildcats are coming off a 74-72 upset of Miami (Ohio) last Wednesday. Senior F Scott Drapeau, a transfer from UMass, leads the team in scoring (24.5) and rebounding (10.8). Matt Alosa, a transfer from Providence, lends support with 20.8 points and 5.2 rebounds.

MOUNT ST. MARY'S (2-4) at VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH (6-3)

Site: Richmond (Va.) Coliseum

Outlook: Jim Phelan, in his 41st year at the Mount, will move into second place on the all-time list tonight for games coached (1,106), passing Hank Iba. With 722 wins, he is second only to Dean Smith among active coaches. After winning at Loyola, the Mount lost road games against Oklahoma and San Francisco. Junior G Chris McGuthrie leads the team in scoring (21.5). Backcourt mate Riley Inge is averaging 12 points and 5.8 rebounds. Sophomore C Randy Edney is averaging 8.7 rebounds. VCU, coming off a victory over Tennessee State, is led by F Tyrone McCoy (15.9), the only senior on the team. Junior F Bernard Hopkins is averaging 13.7 points.

UMBC (1-5) at XAVIER (7-1)

Site: Cincinnati Gardens

Outlook: After being idle for 12 days, UMBC faces an upstart Xavier team, which has won nine straight at the Gardens, including six this season. G Jeff Massey averages 17.4 points for the Musketeers, who have four players in double figures. Averaging 96.6 points in their past three games, the Musketeers have posted an average margin of victory of 27 points. The Retrievers, who favor a slower pace, ended a five-game losing streak with a 71-45 win over Division III Washington College on Dec. 16. F Marc Lay leads the team in scoring (12) and assists (3.5). The only common opponent is Loyola, which defeated UMBC by seven and lost to Xavier by 35.

WILLIAM AND MARY WOMEN (3-4) vs. MARYLAND (5-3)

Tournament: Dial Classic

Site: Cole Field House, College Park

Time: 8

Outlook: The Terps are trying to regroup from their upset loss to Loyola on Thursday, their first defeat to a state school in 20 years. The Tribe, which lost three starters from last season's 20-8 squad, also has had troubles finding some consistency with no one having started more than four games. Aquendine Khesidis leads William and Mary in scoring with 17.7 points. However, the Tribe has no other player with a double-figure scoring average and is shooting 37 percent. Kesha Camper tops the Terps in scoring (12.9) and is second in rebounding (5.4).
