A Silver Run man, charged last week with assault with intent to murder a Taneytown police officer and numerous other criminal and traffic charges, is being held on $75,000 bond at the Carroll County Detention Center.

William Joseph Iser, 26, of the 4000 block of Littlestown Pike is accused of dragging the patrol car of Pfc. Edward Engel for almost a mile after his vehicle and the trooper's locked bumpers during a chase Dec. 19.

The chase occurred after Officer Engel said he received a compliant of an assault and battery about 9:35 p.m. and that the assailant threatened to return with a shotgun. The officer chased the suspect on East Baltimore Street and along several back roads before the bumpers of the vehicles twice became locked. The chase ended when the patrol car crashed into the suspect's vehicle.

Officer Engel and the suspect were taken to Carroll County General Hospital after they were injured in the chase. The officer was treated and released and the suspect left the hospital without treatment, police said.

After a consultation with the states attorney's office, the suspect was charged with multiple counts of criminal and traffic charges, officers said.
