Defendant in inn robbery loses plea for lower bail

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Bail remained at $2.5 million yesterday for an Arnold man suspected of robbing Busch's Chesapeake Inn Dec. 17.

Annapolis District Judge Martha Rasin told the defendant, Everett Van Carr, 20, "I've heard nothing but information that would endorse what the [court] commissioner has said."

Mr. Carr, who lists his address as the 1400 block of Shot Town Road, is charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, robbery, false imprisonment and assault with intent to rob. He was arrested at his home Friday night. A court commissioner set his bail at $2.5 million shortly before 5:30 a.m. the next morning.

Mr. Carr, who did not have a lawyer yesterday, begged Judge Rasin to lower his bail.

"I've learned my lesson.," he said. "I am not a violent person, and I have no history of violence."

Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Spivak urged Judge Rasin not to lower the bail.

"Not only are they a risk of flight, but they're a danger to the community," she said, referring to both suspects in the robbery.

Police said they expect to arrest the second suspect "in the near future." Judge Rasin told Mr. Carr he could ask to have his bail reduced at a preliminary hearing to be held within 30 days.

Police believe Mr. Carr is one of two men who wore ski masks when they robbed the restaurant in the 300 block of Busch's Frontage Road shortly before midnight Dec. 17. Both suspects were armed with sawed-off rifles. They took $3,500 from the cash register and took a total of $298 from five employees, according to the charging documents.

The gunmen also forced four employees into a walk-in cooler. They took the other employee with them and ordered him drive them from the area, according to court documents.

Their escape plan was thwarted when one of the gunmen kicked open the back door and ran into Officer Brent Weaver. Officer Weaver ordered the man to freeze. The surprised suspect slipped and dropped his rifle, then got up and escaped into some nearby woods, police said.

The other suspect came out of the restaurant about 30 seconds after the confrontation by the back door. He ran in the opposite direction when he saw two officers chasing his accomplice. He, too, escaped in the woods, police said.
