Landscaping excellence awards presented

Chapel Valley Landscape Co. of Woodbine, Ruppert Landscape Co. Inc. of Ashton, McHale & McHale Landscape Design Inc. of Lothian and Gustin Gardens of Gaithersburg garnered multiple awards when the Landscape Contractors Association of D.C.-MD.-VA. announced the winners of its 1994 Excellence in Landscape competition recently.

J. Landon Reeve IV, Chapel Valley president and founder, received the Francis R. Gouin Distinguished Service Award. In addition to Grand Awards in both the residential and commercial categories, Chapel Valley won a Decade Award "for maintaining the Rockledge Center in Bethesda in Grand Award condition for 10 years."

Ruppert won commercial Grand Awards for its maintenance of the Owings Mills Corporate Campus, Decoverly Office Park in Gaithersburg and Dulles Corner Business Park. Ruppert's work at the Silver Spring Metro Center earned the firm an Award of Distinction for installation and a honorable mention for commercial maintenance.

Residential honors for Gustin include a Grand Award "for total residential contracting," an Award of Distinction "for craftsmanship," and a honorable mention "for outdoor living area."

McHale took residential Awards of Distinction "for an outdoor living area" and "for front residential planting."

Other winners from Maryland include More Landscape Ltd. of Silver Spring, residential Award of Distinction "for outdoor living area;" Collee Bugler Associates of Mount Airy, "for total residential contracting;" and Cannon Landscape Management Inc. of Frederick, a commercial Award of Distinction for maintenance at Democracy Plaza in Rockville.

* Architectural Design Works Inc. has been chosen by SBS Homes to design houses for Scots Fancy in Bel Air.

* Arnold S. Tesh Advisors, of Washington, said its president, Arnold Tesh, has assumed the office of president of The Counselors of Real Estate, the professional consulting affiliate of the National Association of Realtors.

* Century 21 Diana Realty said Dave Stromberg and Robert Diana have received the Graduate Realtors Institute designation from the National Association of Realtors.

* Fast & Associates Inc., of Columbia, has been hired to do the advertising and marketing for Russett, a planned community in Anne Arundel County, for 1995. Being developed by Russett Center Limited Partnership, the community consists of single-family houses, townhomes and condominiums in Laurel.

* H. Chambers Co., which says it is Maryland's oldest and largest interior design and planning firm, has opened Chambers Architectural Associates Inc. Both companies operate out of Chambers' headquarters at 1010 N. Charles St. Formerly the Washington office of Morris Architects of Houston, Chambers Architectural Associates Inc. will continue under the direction of James R. Wallace, managing principal and vice president. Robert A. Hickman president and chief executive officer of H. Chambers Co., will be president of the new firm. Richard Snellinger has also been named vice president.

* Harkins Builders Inc. of Silver Spring received three "Excellence in Construction Awards" from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Metropolitan Washington. The company won the Multi-Family Residential category for Park View at Snowhill Elderly, in Laurel, and the $3 million to $5 million Institutional class for the University Parking Garage at the University of Maryland. In addition, Harkins garnered the "Safety Management Award" in the general contractors category for the second straight year.

* The Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded Harkins Builders a $24 million contract to demolish 317 junior noncommissioned officers' family housing units at Fort Meade, renovate 24 units and build 251 units. A second Army contract for $2.9 million calls for the firm to renovate 320 dormitory rooms at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg.

* The Institute of Real Estate Management, a Chicago based affiliate of the National Association of Realtors, has elected Malcolm W. Bates president for 1995. Mr. Bates is president and chief executive officer of Harrison & Bates Inc. of Richmond. Also elected were: John N. Gallagher, senior vice president of Polinger Shannon & Luchs Co. in Washington, president-elect; Jo Anne Corbitt, president of Alliance Commercial Real Estate Services Inc. of Nashville, Tenn., secretary/treasurer.
