Football
NFL-- Fined Minnesota Vikings DT John Randle $5,000 for bumping an official during the Vikings' loss to Detroit. Randle, a Pro Bowl starter who leads all NFL interior linemen in sacks with 11.5, swiped his hand in front of umpire Dennis Riggs late in the game Saturday, appearing to graze the official high on the chest. Randle was ejected. He said yesterday that he didn't mean to hit Riggs.
Buffalo Bills -- Placed G Corbin Lacina and WR Steve Tasker on IR. Signed DB Filmel Johnson and S Greg Evans. Re-signed C Kent Hull, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, to a four-year, $5.2 million contract.
Horse racing
TV Eclipse Award -- Given to "ABC Wide World of Sports" for its coverage of the Kentucky Derby, including use of a remote-control tracking camera that covered horses as they sped down the backstretch. The camera was suspended on a wire that cut diagonally across the infield.
U.S. Trotting Association -- Voted Cam's Card Shark, winner of a record $2,264,714 this year, Harness Horse of the Year.
Soccer
San Diego Sockers (CISL) -- Announced the resignation of Ron Newman, who coached the team to 10 indoor championships in 14 seasons. Newman was 361-207 in the regular season and 94-41 in the playoffs, making him the winningest coach in indoor history.
