UMES (3-4)
at ST. FRANCIS, N.Y. (0-2)
Site: Physical Education Center, New York
Time: 7:30
Outlook: The Hawks were routed by Georgetown, 85-46, after their two-game winning streak. F Aaron McKinney (14.4 ppg) and G Terrell Harris (12.3 ppg) are their chief threats. St. Francis is coming off a 105-103, double-overtime loss to Delaware State in which it wasted seven- and six-point leads late in regulation and the first extra period. The Terriers were 1-26 last year, but should be helped by two transfers, G Matt MacGregor and F Abdul-Allah Torrence, who are eligible for the second semester. All St. Francis starters are averaging at least 9.5 points with G Robert Bailey (23.0 ppg) and F Ivan Patterson (18.0 ppg) leading the way.
AMERICAN (0-8) at LOYOLA (3-4)
Site: Reitz Arena
Time: 8
Outlook: The Greyhounds try to bounce back from Saturday's 78-65 defeat to Mount St. Mary's when they squandered a 13-point halftime lead. They will be bolstered by the return of G Milt Williams (suspended). Forward B. J. Pendleton (17.0 ppg, 7.1 rpg) and G Darius Johnson (13.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg) have been the top players. American has lost five times in the game's final three minutes and is missing F Tim Fudd, who was red-shirted because of a knee injury. F Christian Ast (18.5 ppg, 7.1 rpg) and G Darryl Franklin (13.6 ppg, 4.3 apg) have paced the offense. The Eagles beat Loyola, 112-96, in Washington last year to tie the series at 37.
COPPIN STATE (1-5) at LOUISIANA STATE (4-2)
Site: Pete Maravich Assembly Center, Baton Rouge, La.
Time: 8
Outlook: The Eagles try again to beat a big-name team on the road. They are coming off their first victory, 99-67, over Bowie State at home and have a balanced offense led by F Stephen Stewart (13.7 ppg), G Keith Carmichael (13.3 ppg) and Sidney Goodman (12.0 ppg). LSU was pounded, 111-67, by Oklahoma State on Tuesday night with G Ronnie Henderson (36 points, 25.6 ppg) its only scorer in double figures. His mate in a talented backcourt, Randy Livingston (17.2 ppg), is out with a fractured kneecap and walk-on Quenton Thomas is at the point. The Tigers, whose other loss was to No. 2 UCLA, have been bolstered by the return of F Clarence Ceasar, who missed the first semester for academic reasons.
MARYLAND WOMEN (5-2) at LOYOLA (5-1)
Site: Reitz Arena
Time: 6
Outlook: A Chris Weller-coached Terrapin team has never lost to an in-state rival, a 22-game streak. But the Greyhounds' only defeat was to defending national champ North Carolina. Loyola's Patty Stoffey (22.7 ppg, 8.8 rpg) needs 23 points to become the state's all-time Division I scoring leader. Maryland has won three straight after a slow start but has been off for nine days. Heralded freshman F Kelley Gibson is out for the season and will have knee surgery next month. F Kesha Camper (11.3 ppg) and G Sonia Chase (McDonogh, 8.0 rpg) have led the team. Their common opponent has been Mount St. Mary's, Maryland winning by 12 and Loyola by 11.
