Towson women rebound, top Coppin

If Towson State's women were suffering any aftereffects from Sunday's heartbreaking loss, they certainly didn't show last night.

The Tigers responded by playing their best basketball of the season and ended a six-game losing streak with a 91-68 rout of Coppin State before 119 fans at the Towson Center.

"We showed a lot of character coming back from that," coach Ellen Fitzkee said, referring to a 64-63 loss to Hofstra, when they were beaten by a half-court shot at the buzzer that had kept them winless.

Coppin (2-5), playing its first game in 11 days, never led. The Eagles were hurt by 30 turnovers, 23 via Towson steals, and 36.8 percent shooting from the field.

"Maybe it [the layoff] had something to do with it," said Coppin coach Tori Harrison. "When you can't shoot and can't catch the ball, you can't beat anybody. I'm at a loss to explain it right now."

The Eagles fought back from an early 12-0 Towson run that was led by freshman LaTonya Joyner (career-high 28 points) to pull within six at the half. But they never recovered when the Tigers outscored them, 19-1, over a seven-minute span early in the second half to go ahead 61-38.

Towson (1-6) also received career highs from center Kim Schaffrick (16 points) and point guard Amy Eberhart (13 assists).

The Eagles' Rene Doctor had 18 points and 12 rebounds, but five of the baskets came after the outcome had been decided.

"We're just not consistent," said Harrison. "For 10 minutes in the first half, we were clueless and again for 10 minutes in the second half. "
