Cleveland Indians -- Signed P David Lynch to a minor-league contract.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Agreed to terms with 1B Dave Hollins on a one-year contract worth $2 million plus award bonuses. He hit .222, 4 HRs, 26 RBIs last season, missing 71 games with two hand injuries; in 1992 and 1993, Hollins averaged 150 games, 104 runs, 29 doubles, 23 HRs, 93 RBIs and 80 walks while batting .272.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Announced that, beginning next spring, the club will join 20 other major-league teams in forbidding smoking in spectator areas. Smoking will be permitted only in stadium concourses and private boxes and near food concession areas.

San Diego Padres -- Announced completion of the sale of the club from Tom Werner to software millionaire John Moores. Moores will pay $80 million to own 80 percent of the club. Larry Lucchino, a former president and CEO of the Orioles, will own a minority share and is expected to replace Dick Freeman as president.

Seattle Mariners -- Re-signed free-agent OF Jay Buhner to a three-year contract. Granted OF Eric Anthony his unconditional release.

Basketball

Toronto Raptors -- Reached agreement on a deal to purchase land for a downtown arena for the NBA expansion franchise. Also announced that they had beaten an NBA-mandated deadline for the sale of 12,500 season tickets; they said they had commitments for 15,127.

Colleges

NCAA -- Placed Alcorn State on three years' probation for lying about athletes' eligibility in the men's and women's basketball programs. The penalties include reductions in scholarships, a ban on postseason and preseason play by the men's basketball team, a public reprimand for ex-head basketball coach Lonnie Walker, and other restrictions. In addition, the NCAA reduced financial aid the football program can provide athletes for football coach Cardell Jones' conducting an illegal conditioning session in June.

Big East Conference -- Awarded ESPN rights to all football and basketball games not on a national broadcast network. The deal begins with the 1995 football season and ends when the 2000-01 basketball season does.

Fresno State -- Extended the contract of football coach Jim Sweeney through 2000.

Louisiana State -- Declared basketball players David Bosley and Misha Mutavdzic ineligible for one game for participating in a pickup game last summer in West Virginia.

Maryland -- Announced that sophomore QB Kevin Foley is leaving the school.

Michigan State -- Retained Morris Watts, assistant head football coach, as an administrative football assistant.

Minnesota -- Named former Seattle Seahawks QB Jim Zorn quarterbacks coach.

Nebraska -- Announced that starting WR Reggie Baul has passed a lie detector test over his role in the theft of a wallet and will play in the Orange Bowl.

Football

NFL -- Named following Players of the Week: NFC offensive, Detroit Lions RB Barry Sanders; NFC defensive, Dallas Cowboys DB Darrin Smith; NFC special teams, Detroit's Mel Gray; AFC offensive, San Diego Chargers QB Stan Humphries; AFC defensive, Kansas City Chiefs DE Neil Smith; and AFC special teams, New England Patriots P Pat O'Neill.

Atlanta Falcons -- Placed DE Chuck Smith (knee injury) on IR. Signed DE Dunstan Anderson.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Placed RB Steve Broussard and OT Eric Moore on IR. Acquired TE Derek Ware off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals. Acquired LB Lamont Hollinquest off waivers from the Washington Redskins, for whom he had 25 special teams tackles.

Seattle Seahawks -- Signed S Dion Lambert and S Del Speer. Placed QB Rick Mirer and LB Duane Bickett on IR.

The Touchdown Club of Washington -- Announced that it will award its Local Boy Makes Good "Timmie" Award to Baltimore Football Club owner Jim Speros, a Potomac native, on Jan. 21 at the Washington Hilton Hotel and Towers.

Hockey

Utica Blizzard (CHL) -- Placed female G Erin Whitten on waivers for the purpose of giving her her unconditional release.

Horse racing

Minnesota Racing Commission -- Approved the return of live racing May 19 at Canterbury Downs, 20 miles west of Minneapolis. Canterbury hasn't been used since the 1992 season ended.

U.S. Trotting Association -- Voted Cam's Card Shark, winner of a record $2,264,714 this year, Harness Horse of the Year.

Soccer

Harrisburg Heat (NPSL) -- Activated M Brian Marshall. Waived D Billy Reinhardt.

Tennis

WTA Tour -- Announced it will move its headquarters from St. Petersburg, Fla., to Stamford, Conn., early next year.

NBC, HBO -- Renewed their agreement with Wimbledon officials to continue televising the tournament for the next five years.
