* 10-12 boys -- Behind their tough defense, the Westminster Owls traveling team edged three opponents to win the Carroll County Christmas Tournament Championship at North Carroll. The Owls went 3-0 with only a five-point average margin of victory.

In the championship game, Westminster held St. Joseph's of Eldersburg scoreless for the first quarter and allowed only six points in the second. However, St. Joseph's closed the lead to four on two three-pointers by Chaz Loskarn.

The Owls then hit a breakaway layup and several key free throws to preserve the victory.

Westminster advanced to the title game by defeating St. John's, TC 31-26, and North Carroll, 37-24.

In the St. John's victory, Jamel Smalls paced the Owls with 14 points and Dwayne Magruder led St. John's with seven. Matt Frame and Brendon MacDaniel helped the Owls to the semifinal win over North Carroll with 14 and eight points, respectively.

Others contributing to the Owls' championship included Adam Garheart, Justin MacDaniel, Jason Gorsuch, Tommy Fletcher, Todd Edmondson, Brad Hartzel, Walter Pyzik and Eric Dunn.

North Carroll won the consolation game, defeating Winfield, 36-25. Josh Miller netted nine points for North Carroll.

The Carroll County League regular season begins in January with a nine-week schedule that will lead to a double-elimination tournament at South Carroll in March. Other teams competing in the league are Gamber, Sandymount, Woodbine and Taneytown.

* 10-12 girls -- The Westminster traveling team defeated St. John's, 37-26, in the Westminster Christmas Tournament at West Middle. Westminster needed to come back from six points down to post the 11-point victory.

* 7-9 boys -- Kevin Teal scored eight points to lead the Rockets over the Knicks, 31-7. Kevin Collins and Tim Johnson each added four points.

The Rockets jumped to a 4-0 advantage and allowed only two first-half points.

Teal and Collins were selected as the outstanding offensive players and Johnson was named the most outstanding defensive player.

Matt Dotterer and Eddie Kiesling received recognition for their outstanding dribbling and Bryan Watkins (two points) stood out with his outstanding rebounding.

* 5-7 co-ed -- John Clayton scored nine points and Phillip Clayton added eight to power the Lions over the Heat, 17-10 in the St. John's League. Brandy Smith and Justin Learch each contributed four points for the Heat. John Welkner rounded out the scoring for the Heat with two points.

Wrestling

The Francis Scott Key Junior Eagles won all three of their matches, topping Reisterstown, 53-32, Baltimore Westside, 63-27, and Westminster, 50-39.

Chris Lagunas (115) and Steve Shelley (122) each recorded first-period pins in the victory over Reisterstown.

Nate Yinger (70), Ronnie Howard (80) and Donnie Chiaruttini (85) each won by decision.

Against Baltimore Westside, the Junior Eagles recorded seven pins. Yinger, Howard, Chiaruttini, Daren Hooper (100) and Mike Hobson (115) each pinned their opponents in a minute or less. John Muse (95) and Jason Smith (130) also won by pins, and Lee Crowl (55) won by a 7-2 decision.

In their dual meet against Westminster, Francis Scott Key again took seven matches by pins. Wrestlers winning by pin included Crowl, Yinger, Howard, Muse, Whitcomb, Lagunas and Adam Myer (140). Chiaruttini also won easily, taking a 12-1 decision.

In a tri-meet at Golden Ring, the Warriors lost to Owings Mills, 44-36, and crushed Golden Ring, 52-30.

The Warriors dominated the lower weights in their loss to Owings Mills. Kellen Weber (65) won by pin, Matt Eder (70) took a 9-0 decision and Bryan Hamper (85) dominated with a 21-4 technical-fall victory.

Other winners for the Warriors were Kevin Clark (90, pin), Neil Boger (100, pin) and Jared Zillmer (122, forfeit).

Zach Cox (115) was selected as the most outstanding wrestler with his pin in the Warriors' victory over Golden Ring.

Others winning by pinfall for the Warriors included Dan Gillam (55), Weber, Matt Richard (70), Mike Muller (122) and Jason Hamper (140). Dan Patterson (75), Zillmer, Andy Seal (130) and Ryan Taylor (150) contributed victories by decisions.

The Warriors' B team competed in a tournament in Owings Mills. Matt Dougherty, Brian Merryman and Adam Weisbrod all won their weight classes. Sam Robinson, Kyle Collins, Nolan Gillam, Matt Thompson, Brian Evans, Dan Weaver and Patrick Cavey all placed second.

Gymnastics

Kelly Shabinaw led the Perna Gymnasts to a second-place finish with an all-around score of 35.20 in the Level 6 competition at the Harford Holiday Invitational.

Shabinaw scored a 9.20 in the vault for second place, 8.25 on the bars for sixth, 8.65 on the beam for fourth and a 9.10 on the floor for seventh to place second overall.

Teammate Courtney Prentice finished fourth overall with an all-around score of 35.00, finishing first in the vault and second on the beam. She had individual scores of 9.25 on the vault, 8.40 on the bars, 8.70 on the beam and 8.65 on the floor.

In the Level 5 competition, Brittany Traeger was third in the vault (8.20) and fourth on the bars (8.65); Claire Tull was fifth on the beam (8.65) and eighth on the floor exercise (8.80); Holly Baust was third on the vault (8.65); Megan Newman was sixth in the vault (8.45); Lindsay Winter was eighth on the beam (8.50); and Katie Mechalske was eighth on the bars (8.75).

Becky Fuhrman placed first in the vault (8.75) and fourth in the floor exercise (8.85) to earn a fourth-place all-around finish in the Level 8 meet with a score of 33.85.

Shannon Wright won the Level 9 division with an all-around score 33.60. She placed in every individual event, finishing second in the vault (8.50), third on the bars (8.20), second on the beam (8.20) and third in the floor exercise (8.70).

Kristen Totten took fourth in Level 9 with a overall score of 33.75. She won the floor competition (9.20), and placed third in the vault (8.50) and fifth on the bars (7.95).

Baseball

The Carroll County Rangers (13-3) completed their fall season with losses to the Anne Arundel Community College freshman team, Liberty Road and Morrall Park to finish second in the Invitational Tournament.

The Rangers' most impressive showing was controlling a sluggish Anne Arundel CC team with strong pitching.

Mike Peters (Westminster High) yielded one home run, but then struck out four of the next six batters.

Derek Loughry went 3 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run and three hits. Loughry also struck out four.

Jason Hann (North Carroll High) extended his hitting streak to 10 games and maintained his team-leading batting average of .714. Hann also led the Rangers in runs, RBIs, doubles, triples and stolen bases.

For the season, the Rangers outscored their opponents 97-53 and had a .396 batting average. The pitching staff had a 2.90 ERA and struck out 82 in 58 innings.
