Basketball
* 12-and-under boys -- The GARCI Gators kicked off their 1994-95 season by downing the Peninsula Athletic League, 54-13, in a Stacey Augmon League game last Saturday.
Eric Ross led the Gators and all scorers with 17 points. He also grabbed 17 rebounds and had one assist and one steal. Gavin Floyd tossed in 11 points for GARCI, in addition to his eight boards and six assists.
Brandon Wright, Danny Dolan and Matt Stover each contributed six points and Geoff Fernandez and Jeff Britton added four points apiece. Stover was a force in the paint as he pulled down 12 rebounds and Wright and Britton each grabbed 11.
The Gators (1-0), who led 20-3 at the half, received excellent defensive support from Nate Poerio, who also finished with two rebounds, two steals and an assist.
* 8-10 boys -- The 27-member Severna Park Green Hornets select travel team upped its record to 13-2 with several wins last week.
The Green Hornets split up into two teams for the Gambrills-Odenton Recreation Council Tournament, and their A and B teams secured tournament titles.
The Severna Park A team defeated the Columbia Jaguars, 28-18, for the A Division title, and the Green Hornets' B team slipped past Catonsville, 31-23, for the B Division crown.
In the Oxon Hill Tournament, the Green Hornets "85s and 86s" beat host Oxon Hill, 15-8, before losing to Indian Hills in the championship game, 20-17. The Severna Park 84s fell out of the championship bracket after losing to Clinton, 24-22, but rebounded and defeated Allentown, Pa., 36-14, in a consolation game.
The Green Hornets-Tarheels opened their Anne Arundel County A League season Saturday at Crofton Middle School by defeating Annapolis Gardens, 42-10. The Severna Park Terps began their season in a similarly successful fashion as they upended Annapolis Bywater, 28-6.
In opening-round action of the Langley Park Tournament, Severna Park beat Kettering II, 21-14.
Antwan Thompson led all Hornets players for the week with 36 points, 27 rebounds and five steals. Todd MacMullan had 27 points and 14 rebounds and Matt Latonic added 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals.
Jacob Baxter helped Severna Park's cause with 16 points, 15 rebounds and nine steals, and Jon Taylor contributed 14 points and 12 boards. Tim Pllock had 11 points and eight rebounds and Kyle Dixon and Travis Jones each scored 10 points.
Eddie Dolch and Scott Gauthier tallied nine points and seven rebounds apiece and Jason Werner netted nine points. Rounding out the scoring for Severna Park were Justin Davis (eight points, six rebounds), Carroll Hicks (six points, seven rebounds) and Chris Butland (five points, seven rebounds).
Newtown Gentry and Brian Kinsella had five points each for Severna Park and Bobby Schaech added four points and eight rebounds. Chris Mercer and Ben Pellicani scored four points each and Kevin Camponeschi, Pat Grace, Jimmy Ledsome and Chuckie Warring each had two points. Monte Lawson didn't score, but he did pull down four rebounds.
Indoor soccer
* 12-and-under boys -- The Arundel Soccer Association Strike Force bowed to the Severna Park Sharks last Saturday, 6-5.
Kevin Funk had two goals for the Strike Force and teammates Dustin Page, Matthew Taylor and Brett Bosher each added one goal. Michael Godfrey recorded the only assist for ASA on Taylor's goal.
Playing well defensively in the losing effort were Jason Scott, David Brice and Peter Gaither.
Gymnastics
The Rebounders Level 9 gymnastics team participated in the Christmas in Annapolis Invitational hosted by Docksiders of Millersville.
Pasadena's Stephanie Neutze, who competes in the 14-15 age group for Rebounders Level 9 team, turned in consistent performances on all four events.
An 8.75 on vault secured her a fifth-place finish and a no-fall beam routine earned her a score of 8.70 and a fourth-place finish. A strong uneven bars performance netted a score of 8.90 and the third-place award, and her 9.125 on the floor exercise was good for third place. Neutze's all-around total of 35.475 gave her second place.
The next competition for the Spalding sophomore will be the Sunshine Cup, which will be conducted next month in the Bahamas.
Tae kwon do
Nine members of Vuong's Junior Olympic Team of MultiSport recently attended the Taekwondo Zhang-Sah Championships in Philadelphia, and all nine emerged as double medalists.
Nick Manthos dominated the 6-8-year-old yellow belts as he became a double gold medalist. Joseph Otero, 7, won a silver in forms and a bronze in sparring in the same division.
Mark Pleasants, 9, earned two bronze medals in the 9-10 yellow belt class, and Tim Savina became a double gold medalist in the 9-10 age group.
Jamaal Green was second to Savina in the forms and sparring and brought home two silver medals. Randy Deltuva won a silver in forms and a gold in sparring among the 9-10-year-old green belts, and Michael Visitacion won two gold medals among the 11- and 12-year-old green belts.
Jonathan Otero, competing in the 11-12 green belt division, earned a gold in forms and a bronze in sparring, and Gene Hoffman, 16, competed in the 17-and-over age group for green belts and came away with two gold medals.

Quick Stix '95, a competitive forum for female lacrosse players, will be conducted January and February at Annapolis High.
