Old Mill rallies past Broadneck, 34-27

It was her 15th birthday, but last night was torturous for Beth Hampe. She was in the stands as No. 6 Broadneck faced her father, Old Mill wrestling coach Mike Hampe, and his No. 2 Patriots.

"I don't know who to root for," said Beth Hampe, a Broadneck junior, before the match. "I try to stay neutral, but I guess I'll be happy either way."

That makes at least two happy members of the Hampe household.

Mike's Patriots (4-0) used four upper-weight pins to overcome a 21-0 deficit for a 34-27 nonleague victory over the Bruins (3-1).

The Patriots had their first lead when Mike Hines (160), a county champ two years ago, pinned Andy Chambliss in 1:47. It was an insurmountable 34-21 advantage after teammates Mike Ruth (171) and Eric Donoway (189) followed with pins of their own.

"Everyone from 119 up was moving up a weight class, and I just wanted to bring it home," said Hines, whose season was cut short by a back injury last year. "This was a tough match and a big win for us."

Broadneck's 6-foot-2, 265-pound heavyweight Arto Vartanian, who is 10-1 with seven pins despite being a first-year wrestler, built a 6-2 lead against the Patriots' No. 2-ranked Don Patterson, a regular at 189 pounds.

Patterson then defaulted because of a leg injury.

"I don't think he should have been out there because he was too small for me," said Vartanian, who won at a tournament in Sterling, Va., last weekend. His only loss is to top-ranked Kenny Hunter of Mount St. Joseph.

"The guy was big," said Patterson, "and I felt every bit of his weight."

Broadneck, whose major strength is in the lower weights, took the first five bouts for a 21-0 lead, capped by Lonnie Donner's 9-0 decision over Gary Serago at 130.

At 103, the Bruins' Ben Helbig built a 10-0 lead over Brandon Croghan, but had to survive a five-point second-period reversal and nearly being pinned before winning, 14-5.

His teammate, Matt Ormsby (112) had an easier time, finishing Jarod Marquardt in 1:20. Next came Broadneck's Jim Donner (119), who fought off of his back in the second period, but used an attack that included four takedowns to hold off Tony Nappier, 14-6.

Old Mill's Dave Bryant (125) got his team's first takedown for a 2-0 lead, but Todd Betz overcame that deficit to win, 8-5. Lonnie Donner (130) then blanked Serago, 9-0.

But Old Mill shaved the deficit to 21-16, with victories in the four bouts, including the night's first pin by Nick Basta (145) at 3:09 over Mike Schardt.
