The "Mike and Irv Show" proved too much for Loyola last night at Oakland Mills, where the No. 17 Scorpions handed the No. 15 Dons a 90-70 defeat.
Michael Hill and Irving Conwell each scored 36 points -- the second time this season they have combined for more than 70 points.
Conwell added 13 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Hill had seven assists, seven rebounds and three steals.
Loyola (5-2), playing without starting point guard Jason Vogtman (flu), had trouble handling Oakland Mills' full-court man-for-man press. The Dons turned the ball over 25 times.
"We played defense well tonight," Oakland Mills coach Dave Appleby said. "We rotated into the passing lanes like we're supposed to. That's the way we need to play. We can't play much better than that. It was a great game for us."
Oakland Mills made 12 steals and pressured Loyola into making numerous bad passes.
"They were too slow," said Conwell, who scored 15 points in the first quarter when Oakland Mills (5-1) pushed out to a 27-20 lead.
"That wasn't the kind of pace we wanted to play," Loyola coach Jerry Savage said. "We had a hard time handling the pressure. They just beat us."
It was the second time this season the Scorpions have scored 90 points. They scored 91 in their only loss -- an overtime defeat to Thomas Johnson. Hill scored 39 and Conwell 32 in that game.
"It was a lot of fun tonight," Conwell said. "We should have scored 100 points, but we missed some easy shots and made some dumb decisions."
Offensively, the Scorpions shot well. Oakland Mills was 36-of-74 from the floor and 14-of-20 at the foul line.
Loyola, meanwhile, was 25-of-60 from the floor and 16-of-32 from the foul line.
Loyola's Matt Neumeyer played a power game inside and scored 27 points, his high this season.
But he was shut out in the second quarter when Oakland Mills answered a six-point Loyola run with a 13-0 surge to pull ahead, 45-28. Loyola made another seven-point run, but trailed at halftime, 47-35.
Hill, who sank three three-point baskets, scored 12 points in the third quarter, including a dunk to open the period and two three-pointers near the end of it.
Oakland Mills led, 68-50, heading into the final period.
Loyola could not pull closer than 12 points the rest of the way. Guard Jared Clelan scored 20 points for Loyola.
With the victory, Oakland Mills accomplished what two other Howard County teams failed to do. Loyola had beaten Wilde Lake and Mount Hebron.
"We expected to beat Loyola," Conwell said.
"We were a little fired up tonight because we didn't play that well last Friday [a three-point win over South Carroll] and we wanted to prove what we could do."
