He's not running as much as he did in his competitive days, but that doesn't mean that Nut Hall isn't in position to take over the helm of the Baltimore Road Runners Club.
At its annual election meeting two weeks ago, the BRRC elected Hall as president for 1995, along with the following officers:
* Vice president: Stacey Nicholson.
* Secretary: Les Kinion.
* Treasurer: Bill Diegel.
* Board of directors: Jerry Jurick, Ty Lanahan, Lonnie Richmond, Chris Sinclair, John Roemer IV.
For some, the succession of officers signals the passing of the torch in the Baltimore running community.
"Nut's really the first second-generation Road Runners president," Jurick said. "With him and John Roemer, the club has come full circle."
Roemer's father, John Roemer III, was the club's second president, following the term of Kinion, its founding father, in 1971. Hall joins a presidential group that also includes Mike Pierre, Allan Field, Larry Gang, Mike Pierre, Anna Andersen, Willard Freeman and outgoing president Jeff Sanborn.
"He's probably the most knowledgeable person to take over in years, just because of his longevity," Kinion says about Hall, who became involved with the Road Runners in 1978 while he was a student and runner at UMBC.
Hall disagrees with the second-generation assessment.
"I see my wife as being the second generation," Hall says about Maureen, one of Baltimore's elite female runners. "There's so much of a fitness mentality now. I got into running for fun. Ask anybody I ever competed against and they'll tell you that I was always having fun.
"At that time, we ran to eat. Now everyone is so health conscious. Now everybody is into the fitness thing."
As for his priorities as BRRC president, Hall says: "I intend to be a good expert at delegating. My strongest priority is to build up more leadership in the club. We have not taken under our wing the new people. We need to build up a new cadre of race directors."
