The Father Joseph J. Comyns Knights of Columbus Council 9638 has presented a check for $1,000 to Jean Bertoni. The money came from a pancake breakfast fund-raiser held on behalf of the Elkridge woman.
Mrs. Bertoni is the young widowed mother of three grade-school students who is studying to become a registered nurse at Howard Community College. Her husband died unexpectedly of a rare lung disease.
Mrs. Bertoni is required to spend this year working full time as a clinical intern with no pay. At the same time, she is sole support for her three boys.
Aware of Mrs. Bertoni's plight, the council, led by Grand Knight Jim Craumer, voted to assist her. The council, based at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, sponsored the pancake breakfast in the church hall Nov. 13. Parishioners and friends came to show their support of Mrs. Bertoni's efforts to complete her education.
The Knights of Columbus still is accepting donations for Mrs. Bertoni. For more information on this and other charitable activities of the council, call 796-7459.
