Robert G. Urquhart

C&P; manager

Robert Glen Urquhart, a retired entrepreneur and Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. manager, died of cancer Thursday at his daughter's home in Arnold. He was 62.

A native of New York City, Mr. Urquhart moved to Baltimore with his family as a child.

During the Korean War, Mr. Urquhart served in the Army Airborne division and was wounded in action in 1953.

He enrolled at the University of Maryland, where he managed the Varsity grill on campus and played on the lacrosse team. After graduating with honors in 1959, he was hired by C&P;, where he worked for 29 years.

In 1960, he moved into Bowie's first suburban subdivision, launched a local newspaper called the Belair Express, and started a restaurant, the Charcoale Inn. He got involved in area politics, coached the Bowie Lacrosse team and became first commander of Chapter 7 of the Disabled American Veterans.

In the early 1980s, he moved to Annapolis, where he helped found Bay National Bank and served on its board of directors.

He retired from C&P; in 1988 as an external affairs and community relations manager. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling and boating.

"He did so much for so many people," said his daughter, Nancy L. Urquhart of Arnold. "He liked to be behind the scenes, helping others."

A Mass was to be offered at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis. Burial will be at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Surviving, in addition to Mrs. Urquhart, are two sons, Robert G. Urquhart Jr. of Bowie and Thomas G. Urquhart of Darnestown; and two granddaughters.

The family suggested memorial gifts to the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center, Esophageal Research, 600 N. Wolfe St., Baltimore 21287.
