Chesapeake Tournament
South Carroll entered the tournament ranked No. 7 in the area and No. 10 by the Maryland State Wrestling Association, but limped away with a sixth-place finish.
Of the Cavaliers' four place winners, only regional runner-up Charlie Conaway (152, 7-0) emerged with a championship medal.
Conaway, a junior, who entered the title bout with four pins and two technical falls, overcame a 4-0 first period deficit for a wild 14-12 victory over Woodlawn's Robin Watkins (5-1, five pins).
For South Carroll, No. 2-ranked 3A-4A state champ Mike Chenoweth (171, 6-1) and heavyweight Dan McKennie (6-1) each finished second, and Kevin Sakalas (140) was fourth.
Chenoweth, who has five pins, lost a rematch of last season's state title bout, 8-6, to Meade's sixth-ranked Adam Butts. Chenoweth went 31-1 with a school-record 27 pins last year -- the final one coming in 1:10 of his state title victory over Butts. He had also pinned Butts in 1:37 of last year's Chesapeake Tournament title match.
McKennie led his match, 4-2, before being reversed and pinned in 3:34 by Linganore's Andy Dills (6-0).
McDonogh Tournament
North Carroll sent five wrestlers to the finals at McDonogh, but only Dameon Davis (119) came away with a title. Davis forced overtime with a bout-tying escape and beat Gilman's Maakan Taghizadeh, 7-5, with an overtime takedown.
For the Panthers, ranked fourth in the area and the state, the runners-up were sixth-ranked Corey Rill (130), Tom Kiler (135), Erik Hott (145) and Bill Beltz (Hwt).
Rill, who lost 10-2, and Kiler, in overtime by 7-5, each lost to wrestlers from Hanover, ranked No. 4 in Pennsylvania's AA category and the eventual tournament champion. For Kiler, ranked No. 4 in the state, the setback came against Josh Conover, who entered the tournament with a 90-18-2 career record.
Hott, also ranked No. 4, dropped a 6-3 decision to DeMatha's No. 2 Robert Alexander, and Beltz was pinned by McDonogh's No. 2 J. R. Plienis.
