Doran leads Aberdeen to team title WRESTLING NOTEBOOK

Sixth-ranked Kit Doran (160) decked Perry Hall's previously unbeaten Austin Kim in 1:31 of their title bout to lead No. 8 Aberdeen to the team title in the weekend's 25th annual John Carroll Tournament.

Doran was one of three titlist for the Eagles, who had two runners-up and six third-place finishers to eclipse runner-up and No. 9 Boys' Latin, 192 1/2 -162.

Sophomore Brian Berger (119) got the first of four individual championship pins for Boys' Latin. Senior Tim Berger, his older brother (135), Lev Galitzen (145), and Erik Fitez (171) got the others.

Galitzen, who pinned Jason Smith of Bel Air in 2:25 of their title bout, advanced to the semifinals with a 10-4 decision. He then flattened sixth-ranked Rich Hanzevack of Perry Hall, last year's 130-pound tournament champ, in 1:58.

John Carroll (117.5 third) and Perry Hall (108) had two champions each.

Champions for John Carroll, Mike Babiak (189, 7-0) and heavyweight Greg Stotler (10-1), with Stotler's only loss a 6-1 decision against Mount St. Joseph's top-ranked Kenny Hunter.

Perry Hall's fifth-ranked Nick Sidiropoulos, winner a year ago at 103, prevailed at 112, and fourth-ranked Steve Boothe at 130.

Indians on warpath

In matches last week, Franklin wrestlers Son Nguyen (119), Sean Groszkowski (135) and Chris Termotto (160) pulled upset victories over Perry Hall's Sidiropoulos and Steve Boothe and No. 5 Mykol Thomas (Woodlawn), respectively.

Nguyen edged Sidiropoulos, 8-6, and Groszkowski downed Boothe, 7-1, in Thursday's dual meet, and Termotto stopped Thomas, 12-4. All three Franklin wrestlers ended the week by placing second in the Chesapeake-Anne Arundel Tournament.

Friends

In a runner-up finish to No. 13 Westminster at Friends, Loyola's Nick Marsalek (125), Nick Hollick (135) and Mark Lilly each went 5-0 to win titles. Calvert Hall was third behind third-ranked Gino Amasia (119) and freshman Rob Johns (112).

Friends was last in the seven-team field with individual champs Mike Lamonica (145) and fourth-ranked Ethan Goldberg (160).

Bruce is back

Dunbar's 1A-2A state runner-up Bruce Pendles (130) returned to the mat for the first time since helping the Poets' football team to a state title, pinning three opponents and beating a fourth, 8-2, for the title in the weekend Lackey Invitational.

Pendles' fourth-ranked teammate Hermondez Thompson (145), a state runner-up last year, lost his title bout, 10-0, to Bullis' top-ranked Benny Ferro. Dunbar's Lydell Henry (152) was third after losing a 6-4 decision to Lackey's No. 2-ranked state runner-up Ryan Hersey, the eventual champion.

Owings Mills dominates

Seventh-ranked Owings Mills had five individual champs and placed 11 others in the top four in winning Saturday's Hereford Invitational, 213-150.5, over the host team.

Top-ranked defending state champ Steve Kessler (145) and Paul Schulman (152) pinned all three opponents, teammate Josh Ellin (130) scored three technical falls, and Ari Dolid (135) and Jimmy Hudson (140) each had two pins.

Runner-up Hereford's individual champs were Roy Collins (189) and unbeaten heavyweight Glen Warner, who pinned all three opponents.

For third place Sparrows Point, No. 2-ranked Thomas Free (103), No. 4 Gary Maynor (112), Mike Young and No. 5 Sean Mryncza (125) were champions. Free, Maynor and Mryncza improved to 9-0, and Young to 5-0.
