A thief who entered a Brooklyn Park home through an unlocked basement window Thursday stole $1,800 from a cash box, county police said.
A resident of the home in the 4000 block of Belle Grove Road discovered the theft when he returned home about 7 p.m. and noticed the screen pulled away and the rear basement window open. His wife had left the house about 9 a.m., police said.
Investigators believe the basement window was unlocked because no pry marks were on it. The money was in a cash box on the front bedroom dresser.
The thief left the bedroom light on and a screen door partially ajar, police said.
Man is accused of striking officer
A Brooklyn Park man accused of assuming a boxer's stance and challenging a Northern District officer to a fight was arrested Thursday morning, county police said.
Officer David Frendlich went to a home in the 4600 block of Kramme Ave. about 12:30 a.m. to investigate a complaint of a man screaming obscenities. Officer Frendlich talked to the man, who is accused of continuing to shout obscenities when the officer tried to talk to neighbors. When Officer Frendlich told the man he was under arrest, he is accused of drawing back his fist and saying, "Let's go," police said.
The man was arrested after Officer Frendlich extended his nightstick and took a defensive stance. The man is accused of being combative at Northern District station, striking Officer Frendlich once on the left hip with a closed fist, police said.
James B. Stilley, 38, of the 4600 block of Kramme Ave. was charged with battery, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, police said.
Man is charged in shoplifting at Giant
County police arrested a Pasadena man Thursday afternoon and charged him with shoplifting from the Giant Food store in Cromwell Field Shopping Center, authorities said.
A security officer at the store, in the 7300 block of Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., told police he saw a man enter the store shortly before 2 p.m. and put three cartons of cigarettes worth more than $50 under his coat.
The security officer stopped the man when he tried to leave without paying for the merchandise, police said.
Gossice Durrell Henson, 29, of the 8300 block of Catherine Ave. was charged with theft under $300, police said.
Prisoner charged in officer's injury
An officer suffered a cut on the left side of his face Thursday night after a prisoner he was taking to Annapolis District Court from the Southern District station allegedly attacked him, county police said.
Officer Scott A. Stevens was treated at Anne Arundel Medical Center and released.
He told police that when he went to the prisoner's cell shortly after 8 p.m., the prisoner told him that he was meditating. The man is accused of using both hands to hit Officer Stevens in the face with the handcuffs on his wrists, police said.
Louis Morris Snowden, 40, of the 1300 block of Tyler Ave. in Annapolis was charged with assault and battery, police said. He was originally arrested on another battery charge, a District Court spokeswoman said.
