Football in daytime, Foreman at night

THE BALTIMORE SUN

It's the last full weekend before Christmas, so you may well have lots of errands to run, shopping to do or people to see. Tonight's the night -- because television, as a thoughtful early gift to harried families everywhere, has conspired to present a night of prime time in which virtually nothing is worth watching. However, you do have two good football games in the afternoon, and George Foreman on "Saturday Night Live" late at night, so plan accordingly.

* "NFL football" (1 p.m.-conclusion, Channel 45) -- Fox's coverage today is of two teams battling it out in the NFC Central division: the Minnesota Vikings (9-5) vs. the Detroit Lions (8-6). The Vikings head the division with two games remaining, but a win by Detroit today would put them in a tie for first. Fox.

* "NFL football" (4 p.m.-conclusion, Channel 2) -- NBC's game has a little less drama: The San Francisco 49ers, with the best record in football at 12-2, are playing the 7-7 Denver Broncos, who look to be one loss away from being eliminated from playoff contention. But to catch a glimpse of how the NFC's probable representative in the 1995 Super Bowl is closing out its season, ++ fans would be advised to follow San Francisco all the way. NBC.

* "Christmas at Home With the Stars" (8-9 p.m., Channel 13) -- If you want to see how Kenny G spends his Christmas at home, or hear him play "White Christmas" on the saxophone, this special's for you. For the same reasons, I know it's not for me. However, other guests include Aretha Franklin singing "Joy to the World" (emphatically not the Three Dog Night song) and Carly Simon, joined by her family, singing the poignant tribute to her late mother, "Like a River." ABC.

* "The Commish" (10-11 p.m., Channel 13) -- Ernest Borgnine, making a rare TV appearance, guest stars on tonight's new episode of "The Commish." ABC.

* "Saturday Night Live" (11:30 p.m.-1 a.m., Channel 2) -- George Foreman is the guest host, and the musical guest is Courtney Love's group, Hole. Since the guest host always introduces the musical guest, that, in alone, will be a moment worth anticipating: the boxing heavyweight champion of the world saying, "Ladies and gentlemen . . . Hole!" NBC.

Cable

* "Tombstone" (8-10:15 p.m., SHO) -- Personally, I decided long ago what should be engraved on both sides of my own tombstone: "See Other Side."

* "The Cisco Kid" (9:30-11:30 p.m., TNT) -- Now that Jimmy Smits is back on prime time in a big way on "NYPD Blue," perhaps viewers will be more attentive, as well as surprised and amused, to note him in the starring role of another 1994 TV project: The TNT telemovie remake of "The Cisco Kid."
