THE BALTIMORE SUN

Edward Terry Jones, an editor at The Sun for 15 years, died Thursday at his home in Tuscany-Canterbury. The cause of death was undetermined.

Mr. Jones, 48, had been the newspaper's weekend editor since 1992. He was appointed assistant national editor in 1984, having joined The Sun as a copy editor in 1979.

"The loss of Terry leaves a large gap in our ranks. He will be missed, not only for his fine work, but also for his true scholarship and subtle sense of humor," said John S. Carroll, editor of The Sun.

Before joining the newspaper, he taught English literature at the University of Pennsylvania and at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. He taught English in Libya in 1968-1969.

Friends and family remembered his enjoyment of gourmet food and fine wine. "He took the important things in life very seriously, but he also took the pleasures of life very seriously," G. Jefferson Price III, The Sun's foreign editor, remembered. "And he liked to share them."

Mr. Jones shared his gourmet interest with the Cork and Fork Club, whose members took turns preparing meals for each other every six weeks or so.

A graduate of Parkville High School, he earned a bachelor's degree from Haverford College in Pennsylvania, bachelor's and master's degrees from Oxford University in England and a mas

ter's from the University of Pennsylvania, all in English literature.

The Parkville native returned to Baltimore County in 1976 after leaving the University of Pennsylvania. He moved to a home on Stoney Run Lane a year ago after living in an apartment on University Parkway for about 10 years.

L His marriage to the former Nannette Holben ended in divorce.

Mr. Jones is survived by a son, Edward "Ben" Holben Jones, a student at Oberlin College in Ohio; his parents, Monia M. and Edward U. Jones of Parkville; and two brothers, Duane S. Jones of Connecticut and Randy L. Jones of Parkville. Plans for a memorial service were incomplete yesterday.
