You'd never know the new Classic to Go Cafe Express in the Village of Cross Keys was set up in 48 hours. Classic Catering People hasn't been able to work out a lease with the Rouse Co.; but the Cross Keys merchants were anxious to have an eating place for holiday shoppers, so the company agreed to open temporarily.
The food is prepared ahead because the space (where the Village Market used to be) doesn't have a full kitchen. You can get homemade soups, six or seven sandwiches, salads and baked goods. Hours are 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
* Schlotzky's, the first Maryland location of a fancy deli chain based in Austin, Texas, has opened at 203 E. Redwood St., (410) 539-8100. Breads are baked daily, including jalapeno cheese buns. Specials include the Original, a sandwich on sourdough with three meats, three cheeses, black olives, onions, lettuce and tomato; sourdough crust pizzas; and salads, such as a Smoked Turkey Chef.
* The new Peacock Cafe in the Lord Baltimore Radisson Hotel, (410) 539-8400, offers deli sandwiches and such specialty coffee drinks as cappuccino and espresso. It's open seven days a week.
* The Cross Keys Inn called to say that a staff member gave me incorrect information last week. The inn's Village Roost will be open on Christmas Day, but not the formal restaurant, Crossroads.
