Tips for driving down Christmas tree lanes

THE BALTIMORE SUN

For ease of planning, most light-gazing routes outlined on the preceding pages begin at an exit from the Baltimore Beltway, I-695.

But before getting into the car, do some planning with a detailed map. Use grid location systems to find and note each neighborhood for later reference.

Designate a navigator and equip that person with a flashlight to check routes and addresses as you go.

Be a courteous driver. On some streets, space is tight, many vehicles may be cruising slowly, and pedestrians may be afoot.

Indeed, in some neighborhoods, getting out to walk is the best way to appreciate the volume and variety of decorations.

Take the time to cruise through neighborhoods on your own. One massively decorated home often spurs others to join in the spirit.

Take along a thermos with warm beverages (non-alcoholic, please) and holiday cookies or other refreshments. On some routes, the drive between spectacular houses is lengthy.

We know there are other houses out there worth seeing, so go exploring!
