First-rate series have first-run episodes

THE BALTIMORE SUN

It's tough choices night again -- "Picket Fences" and "Homicide: Life on the Street" are both showing first-run episodes, at the same time. Also, an hour earlier, is a fresh episode of "The X-Files." On nights such as these, it's selecting the quality TV, rather than finding it, that's the tougher task.

* "Circus of the Stars Goes to Disneyland" (8 p.m.-10 p.m., Channel 11) -- This year the "Circus of the Stars" hits a new low, and not just by giving Disneyland another promotional platform. This annual variety special used to attract actual stars, for whatever reasons, but now that we're down to the 19th outing, the definition of "stars" has been widened rather generously. You may know their faces, and their TV roles, but just from the names alone, how many of these "stars" can you identify? A. J. Langer. Tichina Arnold. Jenna von Oy. J. C. Wendel. David Yost. Ashlee Levitch. CBS.

* "The X-Files" (9 p.m.-10 p.m., Channel 45) -- Eric Christmas, who both dispensed and received guidance as the old man chatting with Macaulay Culkin in "Home Alone," is one of the guest stars in this episode, which has to do with a nursing home, Alzheimer's and a reported rape. Fox.

* "Homicide: Life on the Street" (10 p.m.-11 p.m., Channel 2) -- Here's an interesting guest appearance. Nancy Marchand, who, in the '50s, played the butcher's girlfriend in the original TV version of Paddy Chayefsky's "Marty," and who, in the '80s, played the Los Angeles Tribune publisher in "Lou Grant," returns to prime-time in a one-shot role on tonight's "Homicide." NBC.

* "Picket Fences" (10 p.m.-11 p.m., Channel 11) -- David Duchovny as Mulder will not be seen tonight on this series, even though his character originally was part of this crossover script. However, if you saw last week's "X-Files" about cattle being injected with alien DNA, this "Picket Fences" episode will provide enough parallel plotting to suggest what might have been, if only CBS had approved the playful collaboration. One actress who does show up, though, is Leigh Taylor-Young, making a return appearance to "Picket Fences." CBS.

Cable

* "Dennis Miller Live" (10 p.m.-10:30 p.m., HBO) -- Could be the hottest installment of the season: Mr. Miller's guest is Martina Navratilova.
