Indoor soccer
* 14-and-under boys -- Matt Canada scored the game-winning goal as the Freedom Blazers came back to upend the Freedom United, 4-2, at the Carroll County Indoor Center. The Blazers scored four straight goals to pull out the victory.
The United quickly jumped out to a 2-0 first-quarter lead. Peter Salvano then pulled the Blazers back, scoring two goals to tie the game at 2.
Canada scored the game-winner soon after and Daniel Moody added an insurance goal.
The Blazers' offense, which constantly applied pressure on the United after a scoreless first quarter, also included Matt Becker, Matt Kelley, Chris Lurz and Geoff Nordling.
The defense, which was led by the game's most valuable player Greg Bohle, also rebounded from a lopsided start to shut out the United for the final three quarters. Bohle, Owen Hubbs and Beau Brooks played physical defense in front of goalkeeper Kevin Schreiner.
The Blazers began the season with an 8-0 rout of Willets Painting.
Tennis
* Adult league -- The Love Machine (3-0) narrowly defeated the Chip 'n' Chargers, 34-31, to take over first place in the Carroll Cup Tennis League. The perennial leader in the league, the Love Machine has either led or tied for the league lead in all but two months in the club's four-year existence.
Riding its strength in doubles, the Love Machine never trailed, but actually won the match in Brian Bishop's loss. Mike Kwedar defeated Bishop, 8-6, but Bishop only needed to avoid a five-game loss to secure the team victory.
After Pat Higgs and Carlton Thomas the mixed doubles match, 8-7, Debbie Courter and Paula King took the women's doubles, 8-3. Those wins staked the Love Machine to a 16-10 lead.
AThen the Chip 'n' Chargers (1-2) rallied behind their strength in singles. Mike Rowe's 8-4 victory in men's singles cut the margin to 20-18.
The Love Machine's men doubles tandem of Allen Anthony and Ray Ela won 8-5 to push the lead up to five.
The Love Machine claimed sole possession of first as the previously winless Topspinners (1-2) topped the then-undefeated Coyotes, 30-25.
The Topspinners spotted the Coyotes to an 8-0 lead after forfeiting the mixed doubles match. But the Coyotes (2-1) could only hold that lead for three matches.
Elizabeth and Sandra Yingling cruised to an 8-2 victory in women's doubles to reduce the lead to 10-8. Kevin Rash's 8-5 win in men's singles gave the Topspinners their first lead at 16-15.
Building on that advantage, the Topspinners got an 8-2 win from their men's doubles team of Rick Schaefer and Tom Jackson.
The Topspinners clinched the upset win after Duane Yingling won his first game in an 8-6 loss to Bernie Polishuk.
The Coyotes are tied with the Aces and the Poachers at 2-1 and trail the Love Machine by one match.
The Aces dominated the Bush-Whackers, 35-23. Sprinting to a 12-game lead after three matches, the Aces clinched the team win early in the fourth match.
The doubles teams of Pat Whip and Jackie Timmons, Dan Clatterbuck and Stephanie Broderick and Gene Grosh and Jim Larimer outscored the Bush-Whackers, 24-12.
The Poachers defeated the Grand Slams, 33-27, behind two victories by Ann Muhvich. She teamed on two doubles teams that outscored the Grand Slams 16-5.
Muhvich teamed with Carlos Vasquez in mixed doubles and played with Sandy Jankevicius in women's doubles.
John Weis and Bill Horner recorded the only other win for the Poachers, an 8-6 victory in men's doubles.
The Extenders rolled with three straight match wins to come back for a 29-21 victory over the Breakers.
After trailing the Breakers by six, the Extenders capitalized with wins from their men's singles and doubles and women's doubles to outscore the Breakers, 24-5.
Outdoor soccer
* 12-and-under -- Three Carroll County residents recently played on the Baltimore Beltway Soccer League champion United Select Football Club. The team went 7-1 in the league and finished second and third in two out-of-state tournaments.
In 23 games, the USFC dominated opponents, 88-23. The USFC finished with an 18-2-3 record.
Players from the county included Daniel Levin, Matt Kinsler and Josh Ches.
