* 10-year-old boys -- It was a productive week for the Howard County Youth Program Hawks.

The Hawks won three games, including two in league play, and made it to the semifinals of their bracket in the GORC Tournament.

The team started things off last weekend with a 40-8 win over Western Howard County in the Catonsville League. Brad Loveless led the victors with 12 points, Scott Clipp had eight and Brian Hedges added six.

Then, in a tournament that began last weekend and wrapped up last Saturday, the Hawks, playing in the A bracket, lost to Severna Park, 32-14, and edged host GORC, 17-16, before falling to the Columbia Jaguars, 33-16, in the semifinals.

The team played well defensively throughout the tournament, with David Freund, Jeff Hill, Tim Lane and Andrew McSkimming leading the way.

HCYP then wrapped up a hectic week with a 50-10 win over Perry Hall in the Gray Charles League at General Stricker Middle School in Dundalk.

Michael Taneyhill paced the offense with seven points and Andy Starr added six. Matt Hashimoto and A.J. Berens kept up the pressure defensively.

* 16-18 boys -- Eric Stancil played a large role in helping the Patmas Baptist Church get off to a winning start last week in the Christian Fellowship Basketball League Preseason Tournament at Mayfield Woods Middle School.

Stancil scored a game-high 31 points, including 20 in the second half, to lead his team to a 46-37 win over New Creation Christian Church in the tournament opener last Friday.

The guard was 3-for-3 from three-point range and got help from Antonio McCray, who also had seven points.

New Creation was paced by Robert Palmer (10 points), Eugene Young (seven) and Lamont Fulcher (six).

First Baptist Church of Guilford in Columbia -- playing the role of tournament hosts -- defeated the T.J. Rebels, 45-40.

Cory Britton led the victors with nine points, and Irving Conwell and Phil Mackey had seven each. Donte Evett led T.J. with 10 and Nate Ellis added six.

L.J. Goode scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Wheaton Panthers to a 42-30 win over Brown Memorial. Lonny Baxter had 10 and Rashad Jones six for Wheaton.

Isle of Patmas defeated the T.J. Rebels, 52-47; New Creation edged Brown Memorial, 33-32, and First Baptist defeated the Wheaton Panthers, 49-48.

The tournament was a prelude to the Christian Fellowship Basketball League regular season, which opens Jan. 7. Thirty teams are scheduled to compete in five age groups.

Ice hockey

* 10-11 boys -- The Howard County Youth Hockey Club Squirt A Huskies didn't have much of a problem scoring goals over the weekend.

But despite scoring 10 times in two games, the Columbia-based team only won once.

The Huskies began their weekend with a 6-4 loss to the Nassau County (N.Y.) Lions on Saturday in Columbia before rebounding for a 6-1 win over the host Reston (Va.) Raiders on Sunday.

Chuck Henn and Wayne Lamanna each scored two goals in Saturday's loss, with Adam Levine and Dominic Uccellini each tallying two assists and Michael Down picking up another.

The Huskies got as close as 5-4 in the game's final minutes on a goal by Lamanna. But that was as close as they would get, as the team's last-ditch effort came to an end when Nassau scored into an empty net.

On Sunday, however, the outcome was a little brighter.

Lamanna scored twice, and Daniel Baron, Jonathan Martinez, Eli Martin and Down each scored once in the win over Reston in a Capitol Beltway Hockey League game.

The Squirts outshot their opponents, 37-16, breaking open a 2-1 game with four third-period goals.

Levine, Martin, Lamanna, Daniel

Buswell, Thomas LaCour, Josh Merson and Chuck Henn all picked up assists, while goalie Kurt Carter played a strong game in the nets.

* Under-16 girls -- The Columbia Courage recently captured second place in the Hempfield Fall Classic in Lancaster, Pa.

After losing their opening game to Manheim Township, 1-0, the Courage came back that afternoon to beat the host Hempfield Heat, 2-0, on goals by Becky Froman and Alika Crew. Liz Skorny and Kristi Lanman assisted.

The Courage then posted a 5-0 shutout over the Monroe Magic to advance to the finals. Skorny led the offense with two goals, and Julie Hastings, Kim Austin and Lanman scored one each.

In the championship game, the Manheim Township Moody Blues proved to be just too much for the Courage, winning, 3-0.

The Courage got strong play throughout the tournament from Shanti Smith, Kyle Rutkowski, Samm Oehl, Megan McCarthy, Nyiesha Ford, Katie Young, Jenny O'Rourke, Stephanie Wu and Kim Obst.
