Maryland's depth at quarterback improved earlier this week, when the Terps received an oral commitment from Floridian Ken Mastrole.
Mastrole, 6 feet 3 and 215 pounds, led Cardinal Gibbons High in Fort Lauderdale to an 11-2 record and the quarterfinals of the Florida 4A tournament this season. He completed 95 of 176 passes for 1,781 yards and 12 touchdowns.
"He's got a gun for an arm and good quickness," said Don Marino, Mastrole's high school coach. "We use some of the run-and-shoot stuff that Maryland uses, and I think it's a real good fit for Ken."
Marino said that Mastrole turned down a scholarship offer from Miami, and that he also canceled visits to Michigan, Clemson and Duke after taking his only official visit, to Maryland, last weekend. The recruiting pitch included a trip to the Baltimore Arena for the Terps' nationally televised basketball game against Massachusetts.
Maryland didn't sign any quarterbacks last year, and it was down to three at the position this year.
Maryland remains a long shot to get the quarterback it wanted the most. McDonogh's Bobby Sabelhaus, one of the nation's top-rated prospects, has taken official visits to Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Boston College and Duke.
Sabelhaus hasn't shown much interest in Maryland, but his father said The Sun's Offensive Player of the Year will listen to the Terps' pitch during a home visit from coach Mark Duffner later this week.
